It is a privilege to introduce myself as Interim Principal of Bronte Girls’ Academy and to welcome you to our school. 

My background is rooted in aspirational teaching and learning, and I believe passionately that academic excellence and genuine care for young people belong together. High expectations matter, but so too does knowing our students as individuals, recognising their potential and giving them the confidence, knowledge and opportunities to achieve more than they ever thought possible! 

Our Trust vision, “Empowering everyone to build brighter futures together,” reflects what I want for every student at Bronte Girls’ Academy. Our values of honesty, integrity, respect, inclusiveness and growth shape the way we work together as a community and the young women we want our students to become. 

At the heart of our academy are people. We want every girl who comes through our doors to become the very best version of herself. We are proud to be an inclusive academy where every student is known, valued and supported. We recognise that young people have different starting points and needs, and we are committed to ensuring that students with SEND, and those who may need additional support at different points in their education, can access the same ambitious opportunities and high expectations as their peers. Inclusion for us is not about lowering expectations; it is about providing the right support so that every student has the opportunity to succeed. 

We want our students to achieve academically, but education at Bronte Girls’ Academy is about more than examination results. Our curriculum and personal development programme are designed to equip our young women with the knowledge, skills, confidence and character they need to succeed both academically and as people. 

We want every student to leave us ready to take her next step with ambition, whether that is at sixth form, college, an apprenticeship, A levels or, in time, university and her chosen career. Just as importantly, we want our students to leave as thoughtful, resilient and compassionate young women who know their own worth and understand the contribution they can make to the world around them. 

We Dare to Dream big 

As a girls’ academy, we have a responsibility to encourage our students to dream big. We want our young women to see possibility rather than limitation and to know that no subject, course or career is beyond their reach. We are particularly passionate about encouraging girls to embrace the world of STEM and to see themselves as the scientists, engineers, mathematicians, technologists and innovators of the future. We want our students to be ambitious for themselves, to challenge stereotypes and to know that the sky really is the limit. 

They are supported in doing this by incredible teachers who combine expertise with care and who believe in the potential of the young people they teach. Our classrooms should be places of intellectual curiosity, challenge and aspiration: places where students feel confident to ask questions, make mistakes, think hard and grow.

Making a difference 

We also believe that education should help young people understand that they are part of something bigger than themselves. Our students have a role to play in their local community and in wider society, and we want them to recognise that their voices, ideas and actions matter. 

Through charity work, volunteering, social enterprise and opportunities to contribute to their community, our students learn the importance of looking beyond themselves. We encourage them to be creative, innovative, independent and resilient: to recognise challenges and have the confidence to believe that they can be part of the solution. 

The young women sitting in our classrooms today will become the professionals, parents, leaders, innovators and citizens of tomorrow. We want them to believe that they belong in that future; to have the courage to shape it and to understand the difference they can make to the lives of others. 

We are more than academic success! 

Personal development is an essential part of life at Bronte Girls’ Academy. We want every student to discover something she enjoys, something that challenges her and something that helps her grow beyond the classroom. Our students can take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, from drama and netball to chess and crochet, giving them opportunities to discover new interests, build friendships and develop confidence, teamwork and leaderships skills. 

Our Duke of Edinburgh programme provides further opportunities for students to challenge themselves, develop independence and resilience, and contribute to their communities beyond the classroom. Alongside this, The Scholars Programme inspires and challenges students academically, encouraging them to think deeply, aim highly and pursue academic excellence. These opportunities matter. Education should open doors, introduce young people to experiences they may not otherwise encounter and help them discover talents and interests they did not know they had. 

A partnership built on high expectations and care 

We know that young people achieve their best when school and home work together. We value our parents and carers as partners in their daughters’ education and encourage them to play an active part in academy life through parents’ evenings, curriculum guidance evenings, pastoral events and student review meetings, as well as supporting excellent attendance and learning at home. 

Academic excellence rooted in care also means having clear and consistent expectations. We expect our students to demonstrate excellent behaviour, attendance and punctuality and to take pride in themselves, their uniform and their academy. These expectations are not separate from care; they are part of it. Young people thrive when they know that the adults around them believe in them, expect the best from them and will provide the support they need to meet those expectations. 

Our students are our greatest ambassadors. I want them to be proud of Bronte Girls’ Academy, proud of one another and, most importantly, proud of the young women they are becoming. 

Whether you are a prospective parent or carer, a future student, a prospective colleague or already part of our academy community, I hope our website gives you a sense of the ambition, warmth and purpose of Bronte Girls’ Academy.
